Niels Walseth (1914-2001) is a listed Danish artist who was born on August
12, 1914 in Kolding, Denmark. Walseth often used the pseudonym signature
Carl Soderberg for many of his paintings. Neils Walseth was brought up
in a home filled with paintings as both his parents were painters. He
was educated at Teknisk Skole (the Technical School), where the old painter
Jacob Meyer encouraged him to carry on the traditions from the great old
painters at Charlottenborg.
Walseth was a typical exterior painter in the traditional Scandinavian
fashion. He was inspired by the famous Peder Mönsted and H.A. Brendekilde
and was in keeping with their tradition of romance in paintings.
His motifs include everything from small fishing villages in Zealand to
motifs he found on his many study tours to mountainous areas of European
countries including: Austria, Germany (Southern parts like Bavaria) and
Switzerland in Southern Europe and to Sweden in Scandinavia, Italy, Bayern,
and Norway, where he also exhibited.
A Soderberg/Walseth painting "An Afternoon Excursion On the Lake" sold
for $4,626.00 at Sotheby’s, London in March 1990.
