Carlo Christoffer Hornung-Jensen (1882-1960) is a well-listed artist.
Initially he became a journeyman painter in 1902 and was, after graduating
from The Techn. School in Copenhagen, admitted to The Royal Danish Academy
of Arts (also Copenhagen) in 1904. He left The Academy in 1906 to attend
the Academy Colarossi in Paris (under Chr. Krohg and Fritz Thaulow) and
later the École nat. des beaux arts under Gabriel Ferrier and Léon Bonnat.
He mostly painted portraits, genre paintings and landscapes.
He debuted at The Artists Fall Exhibitions (Copenhagen) in 1907. From
1909 he was a very frequent exhibitor at the esteemed Charlottenborg Fall
Exhibitions until 1960. Jensen also exhibited at Kunstnernes Efteraarsudstilling
(the Artists' Fall Exhibition), The Artist Society of November 18 and
the Deer Park group as well as numerous other prominent exhibitions.
He was a member of and later the deputy chairman of the committees of
Kunstnerforeningen af 18. November (The Artist Society of November 18)
and Dyrehavens Malere (the Deer Park Group). In the years 1958-59 he was
also a member of the Charlottenborg Exhibition Committee.
He exhibited at "Kunstnernes Efteraarsudstilling" (The Autumn Exhibition
of the Artists), Charlottenborg and at the Young Artist's exhibition.
In recognition of his work he won several prizes and scholarships, e.g.
The Otto Bache Prize (1930) and The Ornborg Prize (1945).
Hornung
Jensen was highly influenced by his tutors Fritz Thaulow and León Bonnat
which formed his naturalistic manner. Furthermore, his versatile technical
education enabled him to paint a broad selection of motifs, ranging from
portraits over genre pictures to landscapes.
A Jensen painting "The Family Picnic" sold for $7,500 at Christie's, New
York, in February 1986.
