Peder Jacob Marius Knudsen (1868-1944) is a well-listed Danish artist.
He studied painting at Kunstakademiet (the Academy of Fine Arts) in Copenhagen
and received the golden prize. He also studied at Leon Bonnat's painting
school in Paris and spent a large part of his life abroad living and painting
in France, Switzerland, and Norway.
Knudsen was best known for his naturalistic landscapes of the island of
Bornholm and the Skagen region of Denmark. He exhibited for many years
at "Den Frie" (the Free Exhibition), in Bergen, as well as the Paris Salon,
and Helsingfors. He is represented at Teatermuseet (the Theatre Museum),
Aarhus Art Museum, Aabenraa Museum, and in Die Kunsthalle, Hamburg.
He was a member of and later the deputy chairman of the committees of
Kunstnerforeningen at 18. November (The Artist Society of November 18)
and Dyrehavens Malere (the Deer Park Group). In the years 1958-59 he was
also a member of the Charlottenborg Exhibition Committee.
He exhibited at "Kunstnernes Efteraarsudstilling" (The Autumn Exhibition
of the Artists), Charlottenborg and at the Young Artist's exhibition.
A painting by Peder Knudsen "In the shade" sold for $8,417 at Christie
s, London in March 1990. Today, Knudsen paintings have become increasingly
popular with American collectors as the U.S. market for 19th century European
paintings continues to grow.
