Niels Frederik Schiottz-Jensen (1855-1941) a listed Danish artist was
initially apprenticed to a merchant but was admitted to The Royal Danish
Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen) in 1873 and took his exam from there
in 1879. In 1882-83 he was further educated at The Acad. Colarossi in
Paris.
In appreciation of his talent and work he won The Academy Award twice
(in 1886 and 1895) and received The Annual Medal 1. Class in 1895. He
made several study tours. Apart from the above-mentioned stay in Paris
in 1882-83 he visited Italy in 1886 and made a larger tour to Italy and
Tunisia (North Africa) in 1891. Finally, in 1911, he made a tour to Rome,
Italy.
He debuted at the esteemed Charlottenborg Exhibitions (Copenhagen) in
1880 and exhibited there continuously henceforth. He was also a frequent
exhibitor on other prominent Danish exhibitions, e.g. at the November
18, Artist Society Exhibitions and The Artist' Fall Exhibitions, both
in Copenhagen.
Initially Schiöttz-Jensen impressed with his highly realistic street life
paintings but later turned to more naturalistic motifs especially his
Italian paintings are based on the romantic ideas of the 19th century.
