Børge Christoffer Nyrop (1881-1948) was born January 15, 1881 in Copenhagen
the son of manufacturer Johan Ernst Nyrop. He studied at S. and G. Vermehren's
private school, graduated from Kunstakademiet (the Royal Academy of Fine
Arts) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and in 1907 continued his education in Paris
under L. Simon. He went on further study tours to Italy, Germany, the
Netherlands and Belgium.
Borge Nyrop received Soedring's prize in 1907 and Neuhausen's prize in
1911 (both private distinctions). He exhibited for more than 30 years
at Charlottenborg mostly with landscapes but also with portraits and labor
motifs. His style of painting was naturalistic/impressionistic.
Beside
Denmark and France, Nyrop traveled and worked in Italy, Germany, Belgium
and The Netherlands. Although he painted portraits, labor motifs, and
cityscapes, Nyrop is best known for the fantastic sunlit farm scenes and
detailed naturalist landscapes from the west coast at Jutland, often with
working people.
A Nyrop painting "Paris in the Spring" sold for $31,701 at Sotheby's,
London, in 1998 (lot 235, 26 3/4" by 23 5/8").
