Hal
Fielding's involvement in art began when he moved to Santa Fe in 1954.
He and his wife went to the museum of Fine Arts and saw a work of art,
which appeared to have been made by setting a piece of newspaper on fire
in several places, then mounting the unburned remains on burlap and framing
it. He said, "I can do that," and he actually did, using tracing paper
instead of newspaper and "burning" His own design. He experimented with
various art forms and media through the years while supporting his family
as a medical technologist, and late in the computer software business,
writing and marketing programs for businesses.
Eventually
Fielding received instruction in pastel painting in the manner of impressionism,
painting landscapes, churches and church interiors. Recognizing the abstractness
in his paintings, which fascinated him, His art evolved into nonobjective
abstract paintings, mainly using acrylics on canvas. He began painting
full time in 1991 and has shown at various galleries in Santa Fe and summer
outdoor art shows with the Santa Fe Society of Artists and the Santa Fe
Artists league, of which he is a juried member.
A
typical day for him begins with painting in his studio. After lunch time
may be spent visiting with friends, Puttering around the yard, or preparing
materials for painting. The day usually ends with reading, often material
of a spiritual nature, followed by a period of quiet meditation. He has
been meditating or many years and believes that this has helped him enter
into the painterly state of consciousness which is reflected in his work.
Fielding believes that each painting is a unique creation, and each one
is usually started by choosing a palette and it's general form. How the
painting ends is only seen as it develops. To become emotionally involved
during the painting process is essential to his painting, making the process
of developing the picture more important to the artist then the finished
product itself.
His
work is often described as being spiritual in nature and ranges from being
quite subdued, with calm colors, to the use of bright reds, oranges, and
yellows mixed in with a full spectrum of colors. Having lived his entire
life in the west, the local colors of the region have a lasting influence
on the nature of his paintings.
Artists
who have influenced him include Richard Diebenkorn, Wassily Kandinsky,
William De Kooning, Hans Hoffman, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Piet
Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
"
I always thought I needed to paint simply because I enjoyed the process.
Upon reflection I am more emotionally involved then I realized."
"The
process of painting allows me to depict local color in the painting and
to communicate with people through my art."
"I
try to capture my feelings in my paintings; the now, the emotions and
spirituality. As many New Mexicans know, the light is unique to the area
and fills me with a feeling of inner feeling I try to show in my art."
"My
paintings have become increasingly non-objective over a period of time
with abstract shapes juxtapositioned. The important thing for me with
painting is, I think, the process, the journey so to say over the finished
product."
"I
believe people like creating and enjoying art because it is an attempt
to understand the true nature of what things really are."
