French artist and illustrator known for his scenes from Parisian life,
born 1848, died in Paris in 1934.
Exhibiting at the Salon de Paris beginning in 1872, this former army officer
participated in most of the major Parisian group shows at the beginning
of the century. He was noted for his rendering of the new woman of the
"belle époque." Jeanniot was also a prolific illustrator of books, including
works by Victor Hugo, de Maupassant, Zola and Balzac.
Cited in the Bénézit, international dictionary of painters, Jeanniot is
also listed in the Dictionnaire des illustrateurs (1800-1914). His works
have been purchased by numerous museums, including municipal collections
of Buenos Aires and Oslo. In Paris, the Museum of Modern Art as well as
the Carnavalet are represented by this artist.
