Marie Kelly (1917-2001)
Click
Here for examples of Marie Kelly's work
Born
Marie Tuicillo, Kelly credited her mother and grandmother both "fine needle
workers," as influences. Her talent was recognized in high school, and
she began art classes at Carnegie Tech in the summer and at night, with
such teachers as Samuel Rosenburgh and Robert Lepper: Later she would
work as a Kaufmann's display artist during the halcyon days of Lazlo Gabor's
tenure.
Married
and the mother of three sons, Kelly carved out time to paint and draw
during the day and would work on tapestries during the evening when in
their company.
In
fact, part of the appeal of Kelly's work comes from it's direct, intuitive
and spontaneous quality, the same components of authenticity that are
appreciated in visionary and folk artists.
Kelly's
list of accomplishments is long and space only allows a dusting, from
inclusion in numerous Associated Artist of Pittsburgh exhibitions at the
Carnegie Museum of Art, a Special 1964 issue of Craft Horizons magazine
celebrating "The American Craftsman," the Three Rivers Arts Festival "10
for 10" show, celebrating artists who's been juried in to the festival
each year of it's first decade to honors like being chosen as the 1961
Pittsburgh Center For the Arts Artist of the Year:
Many
local collectors own artworks by Kelly but also celebrities including
Andre Previn, Walter Cronkite, Barbra Streisand, Elaine de Kooning, Calvin
Klein, Ralph Lauren, Clare Bloom and David Merrick.
Her
work is also in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the
Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown Ohio, and the Westmoreland
Museum of American Art in Greensburg. A 1974 silkscreen "Picnic Fiesole"
is part of the collection of the Carnegie Museum of Art.
